Halloween Party at PFC

November 1, 2006

We had a great time last night at the Halloween party at PFC! A big thanks to all who served and gave of themselves for our community. I’ll post some pictures this week. We had over 300 people come out during the 2-1/2 hours of the event. While I am not a person who judges everything by the numbers, I find this significant given that we did absolutely no advertising! That’s right, we did not send out any flyers or canvass the neighborhood with invitations. How did this happen? Simply this: we have been consistent to serve our community each year on Halloween with a safe and fun place for families to spend the evening. Word of mouth brought people in from as far as Glendale! A family said that they had heard about it and decided to drive out.
A note about using the term Halloween: up until a few years ago we used to call our party a “Harvest Festival.” This was a carryover from the days when we where trying to run something more “Christian” in place of the so-called evil day of Halloween. What we’ve come to realize is that it is part of our mission to embrace the culture around us and not to stand against it. We are called, just as Jesus did, to live in our culture, to embrace it, and to see people transformed by God. So, to call the party a “Harvest Festival” is already to set ourselves against the culture within which we live. Besides, nobody in LA “harvests” anything:-) The term makes little sense in our cultural context.

So, happy All Saints’ Day,
Pastor Pete
